Former New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer made what might be his first expedition into New Jersey politics on Monday when he joined Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop for a groundbreaking of a new residential apartment development.
Spitzer’s company, Spitzer Enterprises, is the developer of a 600-unit project in Journal Square, across from what will be the Pompidou Centre Jersey City and Loews Theater.
The Pompidou Center, a Paris-based art museum and cultural center, announced in June that they would expand to Jersey City. Plans include turning a century-old building at 25 Journal Square into a cultural attraction for the city.
Fulop, recently re-elected to a third term as mayor by a near 2-1 margin, is considered a potential candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor of New Jersey in 2025.
The 62-year-old Spitzer served as New York’s governor from 2007 to 2008, when a scandal necessitated his resignation. He previously served two terms as the attorney general of New York.
