Edison mayor files for re-election as an independent

Democrat Thomas Lankey awaits results of tonight’s mayoral primary

Edison Mayor Thomas Lankey has filed nominating petitions to seek re-election to a third term as an independent.

By filing petitions today, Lankey preserves his option to run until he learns the outcome of a fierce Democratic mayoral primary between Sam Joshi and Mahesh Bhagia.

“I’m keeping the options open,” the mayor told the New Jersey Globe.

Edison is no stranger to independent mayoral campaigns.

Lankey won the Democratic nomination for mayor in 2013.  Incumbent Toni Ricigliano, a Democrat, side-stepped a Democratic primary and mounted an independent bid for a second term.  Lankey defeated her by a 39%-27% margin, with 20% going to Republican Gaetano Gaspari in a five-way race.

Four years ago, Lankey was re-elected by a 59%-41% margin against Keith Hahn, a former Democratic municipal chairman who ran as a Republican.
