Curtin beats Padham-Iaria in Ocean Gate GOP mayoral primary

Padham-Iaria had been ally of disgraced mayor Paul Kennedy

Ocean Gate has watched their longtime Republican mayor, Paul Kennedy, arrested for selling township property and pocketing the proceeds and for stealing money from borough parking meters.

Now, less than a month after Kennedy’s resignation – that came just one day before the council had ordered him removed for failure to attend meetings – Republicans have chosen outsider Bob Curtin to replace him by a huge 79-21% margin against Councilwoman Laura Padham-Iaria.

Padham-Iaria is a former Kennedy ally, although she is not connected to the scandal.  Curtin, the 72-year-old vice commodore of the Ocean Gate Yacht Club, said he was already planning to challenge Kennedy in the Republican primary before the mayor was arrested.

Curtin will now face Democrat Dennis Stagliano in the general election.

Kennedy’s wife, Lynda, has resigned as GOP municipal chair.  Councilwoman Joella Nicastro and Rosemary Mastronardy ran unopposed for two county committee seats.
