Republican Elmwood Park mayoral candidate Robert Colletti is facing fire over a mailer that said his primary opponent, Maggie Giandomenico, would not have time for duties as an elected official because she is a single working mother with two small children.
“The inference that Maggie can’t effectively serve as Mayor because she is a mother of two daughters is offensive and shows the outdated thinking of Bob Colletti and the people who write his campaign material,” Giandomenico and said in a statement. “Bob had no right bringing our children into this campaign. Being the first woman to seek the office of Mayor in Elmwood Park was always going to be a challenge, but never did we expect that our children would be used as a campaign issue.”
Colletti’s mailer lists various qualifications, including experience in government, of candidates running on Colletti’s county-backed slate and Giandomenico’s off-the-line slate.
Giandomenico is the only Republican woman seeking election in Elmwood Park this year, and hers are the only children mentioned in the mailer.
Colletti’s mailer has seen the former mayor receive criticism from the highest-ranking woman in Bergen County Republican politics.
“What a dumbass comment,” said Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi (R-River Vale), the highest ranking Republican woman in Bergen County. “I’ve known Maggie for years. If anybody can juggle work, children and doing the right thing by constituents, it’s Maggie. She’s a phenomenal woman and mother. In this day and age, I’m candidly stunned. It’s not right. It’s not acceptable.”
