Camden County Democratic Chairman Jim Beach said he was let down by news of Rep. Jeff Van Drew’s impending defection to the Republican party.

“I’m certainly disappointed with his decision,” Beach, a state senator, said.

On Saturday, the New Jersey Globe reported that Van Drew’s longtime chief of staff Allison Murphy told members of the congressman’s campaign and congressional staffs that the first-term representative would be moving to the Republican party.

The news led to a staff exodus.

Van Drew has not officially moved parties yet. He’s expected to do so sometime next week.

The second congressional district includes a single Camden Town.

Waterford gave Van Drew 1,887 votes in 2018’s general election. It gave his then-opponent former Atlantic County Freeholder Seth Grossman 2,198.

Van Drew won that race by about 20,000 votes, or about eight points.
