After losing by one vote, Ward seeks recount in Trenton race

By David Wildstein, January 01 2023 1:35 am

Algernon Ward, Jr., who lost a runoff election for a seat on the Trenton City Council by one vote, is seeking a recount.

Jennifer Williams defeated Ward, 427 to 426, in the December 13 election.  Trenton City Clerk Brandon Garcia certified her election on Friday, with Wiliams set to take the oath of office today.

“If as few as one ballot among the 853 or more cast was incorrectly read by the ballot scanner, improperly invalidated, or otherwise tallied incorrectly or not tallied, this would change the outcome of the election,” Ward’s attorney, Flavio Komuves said in a court filing.

Ward did not seek to block Williams from taking office, but did ask for an expedited hearing for a judge to authorize the recount.  The Mercer County Board of Elections office is closed until January 3.
