Justin Braz, a member of Gov. Phil Murphy’s inner circle and the Assistant Commissioner of Transportation, is ending a long stint in state government to join MAD Global Strategy as a managing director.
Braz served as Murphy’s deputy chief of staff from 2018 to 2022 when he joined the Transportation Department as chief of staff. He served as chief of staff to Assembly Budget Committee Chairman Gary Schaer, as chief of staff to Assemblywoman Annette Quijano (D-Elizabeth), and as political coordinator from 1199 SEIU. He also held posts at the Democratic State Committee and on both of Murphy’s gubernatorial campaigns.
“For over six years, Justin Braz has served as a close advisor who has helped me skillfully navigate some of our toughest challenges,” said Murphy. “Justin has built a reputation across New Jersey as a dedicated and honest broker trusted by legislators, labor, and business leaders alike. Although we’ll miss him in the Murphy Administration, I’ll continue to rely on his wise counsel and wish him nothing but the best in his next chapter.”
Braz is a former chairman of the State House Commission and is the governor’s representative on the board of Rowan University at Burlington County and on the Bordentown planning and zoning boards.
At MAD, Braz joins partners Laura Matos and Mike DuHaime.
“Justin is a well-respected professional, with a deep understanding of public policy and how state government impacts families and businesses,” Matos stated. “He is a significant addition to our team as we continue to grow our portfolio and build a world-class team of strategists.”
DuHaime said that Braz was “exactly the kind of dynamic young leader we need to elevate our organization.”
As he prepares to exit state government, Braz paid tribute to Murphy and Transportation Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti.
“Over a decade ago, I entered the public sector believing in government’s ability to faithfully serve the best interests of the people,” he said. “That conviction endures thanks to the many exceptional individuals with whom I have had the honor of working.”
