Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg thinks Rep. Jeff Van Drew will fit in well with the Republican party.
“He probably is going to be very at home with Donald Trump,” she said.
On Saturday, the New Jersey Globe reported Van Drew’s chief of staff had begun informing members of his campaign and congressional staffs that he intended to join the Republican party.
Many of those staffers have since resigned, and Van Drew is expected to formally announce his party switch within the next day or two.
The congressman saw support from local Democrats ebb away over his opposition to impeachment proceedings against the president to the point that Atlantic County Democratic Chairman Michael Suleiman warned he might not win a primary.
Like Suleiman, who has since lost all love for Van Drew, Weinberg thinks Democrats can win back the seat they’ll lose in the next couple of days.
“I think we want a Democrat in that seat,” she said. “It’s a Democratic seat, and we’re going to win it in November.”
