Thompson not ready to back anyone else for governor

Senator wanted Tom Kean, now mounting a congressional bid, to run

State Sen. Sam Thompson wanted Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean to run for governor.

Now that Kean’s announced a congressional bid, Thompson’s taking a wait-and-see approach before backing anyone else to challenge Gov. Phil Murphy.

“I’m open, because we know Ciattarelli is running, there’s rumors that the state Republican chair may run, there’s rumors that Shaun Golden may run — so I think it’s early in the game right now to make a decision,” Thompson said. “I don’t know who’s going to come out of the woodwork. Yes, I would’ve loved Tom, but since he’s not, I’ll just wait and see who’s going to be.”

Golden and state Republican Chairman Doug Steinhardt have been floated as potential gubernatorial candidates.

Numerous other Republicans have declined to rule out a bid for Murphy’s seat.

Murphy isn’t up for re-election until 2021, so Thompson, and every other Republican in the state, has some time to decide who’d they like to back for the governorship.
