Somerset GOP picks Pappas for Senate, Traphagen and Zhang for Assembly

Somerset County Republicans are expected to pick Grace Zhang, an accountant from Princeton, as one of their State Assembly candidates in the 16th district when they hold their party convention this evening.

Zhang will run on a ticket with State Senate candidate Michael Pappas, a former congressman, and Ross Traphagen, a Clinton councilman, in a bid to flip three seats.  State Sen. Andrew Zwicker (D-South Brunswick) is seeking a second term in a rematch with Pappas.

Assemblyman Roy Freiman (D-Hillsborough) wants a fourth term; he’ll run with Mitchelle Drulis, a former district director to Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes).  The incumbent, Assemblywoman Sadaf Jaffer (D-Montgomery), has declined to see a second term in the legislature.

The 16th, which includes parts of Somerset, Hunterdon, Mercer, and Middlesex counties, became slightly more Republican in redistricting.   Still, Joe Biden won it by 21 percentage points and Gov. Phil Murphy by five points.

Zhang is the owner of 3D Financial Group, an accounting firm.
