Renee Burgess has picked up the endorsements of three Democratic lawmakers in the adjacent 29th district: Senate Majority Leader Teresa Ruiz (D-Newark), Assembly Budget Committee Chair Eliana Pintor-Marin (D-Newark) and Assemblywoman Shanique Speight (D-Newark).

The Irvington Council President, Burgess is the leading candidate to succeed Ronald Rice (D-Newark) in the State Senate when 28th district Democrats hold a special election convention on Friday evening.

“We welcome another strong woman whose work has demonstrated she will fight for all of our children and families,” said Ruiz, Pintor-Marin and Speight.  “At a time when women’s rights are again under attack and continue to be eroded, we need Council President Burgess leadership.”

The three legislators praised Burgess’ “exemplary track record as a dedicated public servant who has a firm grasp on issues that impact the region. “

“Council President Burgess is a dedicated public servant and it is clear her mission is aligned with ours. Her purpose and strength will continue our efforts to improve the quality of life from one corner of this state to the other,” they said.  “She is well prepared to lend her voice to advocate for the needs of all residents in New Jersey.”

If Burgess wins Rice’s seat, Essex will be represented by three women in the State Senate – the largest number of any county in state history.
