A coalition of pro-life groups will hold protests outside the offices of three legislators today in opposition to legislation that would protect abortion laws in New Jersey even if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.
State Sen. Vin Gopal (D-Long Branch), Assemblywoman Mila Jasey (D-South Orange), and Assemblyman Vincent Mazzeo (D-Northfield) are sponsors of the Reproductive Freedom Act, which would ensure that women have the right to make personal health decisions when it comes to birth control and abortion.
The groups – New Jersey Right to Life, the League of American Families, LIFENET, Garden State Families, the Family Policy of Alliance of New Jersey, and BlackGenocide.org – will participate in protests at the three legislative offices.
“The Act shamefully disregards advances in prenatal medicine. Instead, it seeks to dehumanize and deprive babies in the womb of their life and dignity,” said Marie Tasy, the New Jersey Right to Life executive director. “It consigns them to inhumane procedures that would not be tolerated if done to a cat or a dog.”
The legislation has the backing of Gov. Phil Murphy and Democratic legislative leaders from both houses.
