Mukherji says Platkin is ‘perfect person for the role’ as next N.J. attorney general

Assembly Judiciary Chairman says Platkin credits considerable credit for guiding state through pandemic

Assembly Judiciary Committee Chairman Rah Mukherj (D-Jersey City) heaped praise on Matt Platkin, Gov. Phil Murphy’s pick for attorney general, saying he was one of the builders of the governor’s first term political agenda.

“Matt Platkin is also a man of his word,” Mukherji said.  “Even if he disagrees with you, he is thoughtful and analytical, he lets you know where you stand, and he is open-minded to hearing another viewpoint.”

Mukherji said it was “imperative that the new attorney general not slow the momentum or reverse the progress made by his predecessors, Gurbir Grewal and Andrew Bruck.

“Matt is the perfect person for this role at this moment in history,” said Mukherji, a former local prosecutor and a leader in the state’s South Asian American community. “His bona fides working through critical public safety and policy issues as chief counsel, his academic pedigree, and his excruciating attention to detail I witnessed while working with him as the Governor’s top legal advisor, all point to his qualifications to do this job capably and to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.”

Early this morning, Mukherji’s running mate, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Brian P. Stack (D-Union City), strongly complimented Murphy on his nomination of Platkin.

“As the architect of a number of the Governor’s most noteworthy progressive accomplishments in his first term and someone who played a critical role in guiding our state’s response to the pandemic in its nascent stages, this is a wise nomination by the Governor,” Mukherji stated.

Mukherji’s support will likely help Platkin.  He is viewed as one of Senate President Nicholas Scutari’s closest political allies and friends in the State Assembly.
