Middlesex County Democrats raised over $100,000 for Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Brian P. Stack on Thursday night, another signal in the growing alliance between Hudson County Senators and the powerful Central Jersey political organization.
The money boosts the coffers of Stack’s bid for re-election as mayor of Union City and for the State Senate in 2023.
Middlesex County Democratic Chairman Kevin McCabe led the Stack fundraiser, along with Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, State Sens. Joseph Vitale (D-Woodbridge), Joseph Cryan (D-Union), Vin Gopal (D-Long Branch) and Patrick Diegnan (D-South Plainfield), and Democratic powerhouse Gary Taffet.
Stack is unopposed in the May 10 municipal election, but that doesn’t stop him from running a full-fledged re-election campaign for the post he’s held for the last 22 years.
He’s also the clear favorite to hold on to his Senate seat in 2023. Legislative redistricting put Stack and another powerful Democrat, State Sen./North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco, in the same district. But within a week, the two worked out an agreement that resulted in Sacco announcing his retirement from the Senate and his endorsement of Stack.
Stack is supporting Sacco for re-election as mayor next year.
Assembly Judiciary Committee Chairman Raj Mukherji (D-Jersey City), a Stack protégé who is widely expected to fill the open Senate seat next year, is also closely allied with McCabe.
