Kennedy won’t run for open State Senate seat

By David Wildstein, February 18 2021 2:25 pm

Democrat Amy Kennedy will not seek the open Senate seat in Atlantic County, where Republican Christopher Brown (R-Ventnor) announced today that he will not seek re-election.

“I’m not planning on doing that,” Kennedy told the New Jersey Globe.  “I’m sure there will be a lot of interest.”

A favorite of progressive Democrats, Kennedy challenged party-switching Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis) in 2020.

She won the Democratic primary with 62% after carrying Atlantic County with 75% of the vote but lost the general election to Van Drew.  She outpolled Van Drew in Atlantic by a 51%-48% margin.

Some Democrats are clamoring for a 2022 rematch in a district that has not yet been redrawn to reflect recent census.

Kennedy has continued to be a strong critic of Van Dew on social media following his votes to reject the certification of the 2020 presidential election results and against the impeachment of former President Donald Trump.

The front-runner for the Democratic nomination for State Senate is four-term Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo (D-Northfield).
