Tenafly Mayor Mark Zinna endorsed Gordon Johnson for State Senate on Thursday evening, becoming the 5th mayor to take sides in the race for the Democratic nomination in the 37th district.

“Gordon is there when you need him. He picks up the phone and reaches out on a regular basis to ask how he can be of help to our community,” said Zinna. “That proactive, get the job done attitude is just what we need in New Jersey.”

Johnson faces Valerie Vainieri Huttle in the race to succeed Loretta Weinberg, the five-term Senate Majority Leader who announced last week that she would not seek re-election.  Johnson and Vainieri Huttle both represent the 37th in the State Assembly.

Zinna called Weinberg “a giant in the New Jersey Legislature.”

“She has been a tremendous friend to the people of Tenafly,” Zinna stated.  “Gordon is the right person, at the right time, to take up the mantle as our next senator in the 37th district.”

Johnson has received the backing of Democratic mayors in Englewood, Fort Lee, Palisades Park and Leonia.
