Assemblyman Gordon Johnson on Thursday declined to repudiate Teaneck mayor Mohammed Hameeduddin for declining to rule out a challenge to Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg
“It’s America,” Johnson said. “If he wants to run, he can … It’s part of the process.”
Weinberg and Johnson both represent the 37th legislative district.
Weinberg and Hameeduddin have been longtime political rivals in Teaneck, where the senator launched her political career as an activist and councilwoman.
She remains incredibly popular there and got more votes there in 2017 than did Gov. Phil Murphy.
Johnson similarly punted on Hameeduddin’s chances against Weinberg.
“I think it’d be up to people of the 37th district to decide that,” Johnson said when asked if he thought the Teaneck mayor could defeat Weinberg.
