Senator wants to avoid Edison having two Assembly members

State Sen. Patrick Diegnan (D-South Plainfield) is backing East Brunswick Councilman Sterley Stanley for the Assembly seat vacated when Nancy Pinkin resigned to become Middlesex County Clerk.

“I’m supporting Sterling Stanley,” he said. “He’s a good guy and he works with me all the time.”

Stanley will face Edison Councilman Joe Coyle in a special election convention before Middlesex County Democrats Tuesday.

Diegnan’s support may have more to do with geography than anything else.

Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak (D-Edison) lives in the same town as Coyle.

“I think they’re both from the same town. We’re really not being to everybody’s inclusive advantage, but again, no reflection on Joe,” Diegnan said. “It’s two quality people.”
