Chaparro not ready to back Fulop in possible senate run

Assemblywoman Annette Chaparro isn’t ready to back Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop should he run for U.S. Sen. Cory Booker’s seat if the latter runs for and wins the Democratic nomination for President in 2020.

“You are way into the future,” Chaparro said. “A couple of days in politics is a lifetime, right? Not even a week. I’m not even in that mindset. Who knows how many people are going to run in the future, but we’ll see.”

While Fulop, once a rising star, has found himself with a shrinking pool of allies following Hudson Democrats’ internal feud, he still has money behind him.

Coalition for Progress, a super PAC backing the mayor, has $3.1 million banked, and it could begin pumping that money out should Fulop choose to mount a run for higher office.
