State Sen. Kip Bateman (R-Neshanic Station) is intrigued by the prospect of a 2021 gubernatorial run, but he indicated he would defer to former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli (R-Hillsborough), who has already announced his intentions to challenge Gov. Phil Murphy in 2021.

“I think my friend Jack’s going to run from Somerset County. I’d be interested, but it’s a big commitment — not only time, but financially — and I think Jack’s in a good position to be our candidate. So, I look forward to working with him,” Bateman said. “And I think we need a change, I really do.”

Ciattarelli ran for mounted a run for governor in 2017, but he was defeated in the primary by former Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, who ended up losing to Murphy that November.

Before his gubernatorial run, Ciattarelli held the Assembly seat now occupied by Assemblyman Roy Freiman (D-Hillsborough).
