District 39 Assembly candidates backed by State Sen. Holly Schepisi (R-River Vale) romped incumbent Assembly members Bob Auth (R-Old Tappan) and DeAnne DeFuccio (R-Upper Saddle River) in fundraising, according to 11-day pre-primary reports filed with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission.
A joint committee for Saddle River Councilman John Azzariti and former Saddle River GOP Municipal Chairman Jon Kurpis raised $83,150 between May 8 and May 25. It spent heavily and had $34,647 remaining in its coffers.
Kurpis has not filed campaign finance reports with ELEC, and Azzariti reported raising just $2,763 for his personal campaign account. Still, the councilman had $84,880 left in his war chest.
Auth raised $18,500 over the same period and had $15,404 left in reserves at the end of the reporting period. DeFuccio brought in $14,275 and had $10,328 cash on hand.
Schepisi endorsed the challengers after a fractious contest to fill State Sen. Gerald Cardinale’s seat following his death in February. Auth ran against her for the seat, losing narrowly.
She’s unopposed in the Republican primary for State Senate.
