Gov. Mikie Sherrill and legislative leaders agreed to a $60.75 billion state budget for fiscal year 2027 on Monday, the governor’s office, legislative Democrats and the Office of Legislative Services spending the week filling in the details.
The process starts today, with the Assembly Budget Committee meeting at 4 PM and the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee meeting at 7 PM to begin approving a series of measures leading to a budget vote on Tuesday.
Most legislators have not yet seen the final budget – something that’s fairly ordinary. The process will begin before anyone sees the completed budget document.
As usual, the governor and the legislature are cutting it close: technically, the budget must be approved by 11:59 PM on June 30, or face a state budget shutdown.
But few expect a crisis, and legislative leaders have the option of stopping the clock in order to meet the deadline.
