U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Robert Frazer announced on Monday that Joyce M. Malliet had been appointed the first assistant U.S. attorney for the Garden State.

Malliet, now the office’s second-ranking official, will help lead the federal prosecutor’s operations in New Jersey.

“Joyce Malliet is an exceptional prosecutor, leader, and public servant whose career reflects an unwavering commitment to justice and the people of New Jersey,” said U.S. Attorney Frazer. “For nearly twenty-four years, she has served this Office with distinction, and I am confident that her experience, judgment, and dedication will continue to strengthen our mission and support the outstanding work of our prosecutors and staff.”

Malliet currently leads the office’s National Security Unit, which works to address terrorist threats, defense contractor fraud, and other national interests. She’d previously led the office’s Special Prosecutions Division and Securities and Health Care Fraud Unit, and she is a founder of the Black Prosecutors Association of New Jersey.

Frazer took over the office in March after more than a year of disputes over who indeed was the U.S. attorney. Federal judge tapped former First Assistant U.S. Attorney Desiree Grace to lead the office at the height of the turmoil, but the U.S. Department of Justice fired her. She later joined McCarter & English as a partner.
