Wanda Payne, congressman’s sister, dies at 60

Retired public school teacher was daughter of the late Rep. Donald Payne, Sr.

Wanda Payne, a retired educator and the scion of one of a prominent North Jersey political family, has died.  She was 60.

Payne was the sister of Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. (D-Newark).

She spent 31 years as a public school teacher at Newark’s Hawthorne Avenue School and a member of the Newark Teacher’s Union.

Her late father, Donald M. Payne, Sr., who started his career as a teacher, represented New Jersey in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1989 until his death in 2012.  Her uncle, William D. Payne, was a state assemblyman from Essex County.
