The 85-year-old former mayor, who was elected in 1983 and served one term, was hospitalized for injuries sustained in the accident.

New Jersey 101.5 reported that Mrs. Cerria, 84, died in the one-car accident near the PNC Arts Center.

“It is with heavy hearts that my family and I offer our condolences to the former mayor of Woodbridge, Philip Cerria and his family on the tremendous loss of his wife in a tragic accident on Friday,” Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin said in a statement on Saturday.  “Our sincerest sympathies and heartfelt prayers for a rapid recovery are with you at this difficult time.”
