Kean administration official, labor leader die

Sid Benjamin, a former commissioner of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, died on January 2.  He was 92.  A World War II veteran who fought at the Battle of the Bulge, Benjamin found Flemington Furs, whose TV ads were well-known throughout New Jersey.  He was a fundraiser for Tom Kean’s 1981 campaign for governor and was nominated to the Sports Authority by Kean in 1985 to replace Robert Mulcahy.

Doc Doherty, the president of Teamsters Local 877, passed away on January 2.  He was 62.  He served on the Joint Council of Teamsters Local 73 and on the OSHA national board of directors.

Oddie Lee Bullock, Jr., a commissioner of the Neptune Public Housing Authority and a Democratic county committeeman, died on December 28.  He was 66.

Angelina Katz, the mother of former New Jersey CWA state director Carla Katz, passed awat on January 1.
