Incumbent councilman dies

George Perry was on ballot for re-election in November

East Rutherford councilman George Perry, Jr. passed away on Wednesday.  He was 67.

Perry had recently won the top vote-getter in a contested primary where an incumbent lost his seat.  Republicans will now have to fill his seat on the council and replace him on the November ballot.

Elected as a Democrat to the council in 2000, he became a Republican in 2009.

Perry’s younger brother, Jim, is a councilman in Hardwick and the second vice president of the New Jersey League of Municipalities.

EDITOR’S NOTE: An earlier version of this story incorrectly listed George Perry as an officer of the NJLM.  It was his brother, Jim.
