Florio Tribute: Guy Sterling

By New Jersey Globe Staff, September 26 2022 5:26 pm

Former Star-Ledger reporter Guy Sterling made the following statement on the death of former Governor Jim Florio:

“As a reporter with The Star-Ledger providing election coverage, I was in Jim Florio’s hotel suite the night he won the Democratic nomination for governor in the spring of 1981 and then again that November when the race he would lose to Tom Kean was still hanging in the balance. He was cordial, friendly and generous with his time and comments on both occasions. I also got to cover the World Cup when it was held in the United States in 1994, including seven games at the old Giants Stadium (a semifinal among them) that wouldn’t have been possible without Gov. Florio’s foresight and commitment. His contributions to the good of the state extended beyond protecting the environment and enacting gun control. May he rest eternally in peace.”
