Gov. Phil Murphy has ordered flags be flown at half-staff in memory of former Assembly Speaker Bill Hamilton, who died last week at age 86.

“Speaker Hamilton served Middlesex County and the State of New Jersey with great vigor, dedication, and honor,” said Murphy. “He will be sorely missed, but his impact on our state will not be forgotten. Tammy and I send our sincere condolences to his friends and family in this difficult time.”

Hamilton served as Speaker and Majority Leader during his six years as an assemblyman.  He served in the State Senate for four years before seeking the Democratic nomination for governor in 1981.
