The League of Humane Voters of New Jersey, a grassroots organization with over 29,000 animal rights activists statewide, has endorsed Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.
The group cited Fulop’s pro-animal rights record in Jersey City: more police officers certified as humane law enforcement officers than any other municipality; an animal abuse tip-line, adding animal welfare into the city’s quality of life enforcement team, and reorganized animal control to be in-house.
Fulop opposes New Jersey’s controversial bear hunt.
“It’s very unusual for LOHVNJ to make an endorsement in a primary, but we chose to do so this year because Mayor Fulop is such an outstanding candidate and strong supporter of animal protection,” said LOHVNJ Executive Director Angi Metler. “As Mayor of Jersey City, we saw Steve Fulop prioritize animal welfare in a number of ways, and we know he will continue to do so in Trenton.”
Doreen Frega, the organization’s special projects director, called Fulop “a true friend to bears and all animals.”
“As Jersey City Mayor, Steven Fulop continually proved to us he was a man of his word,” she said.
