U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders will join Gov. Phil Murphy for a rally at Rutgers University on Thursday.
Sanders announced his New Jersey appearance in a tweet praising Murphy for raising the state’s minimum wage and passing paid family leave and equal pay protections.
“This is the progress made under he leadership of Phil Murphy,” Sanders said.
Sanders is the latest in a group of high profile national political leaders who have stumped for Murphy in recent weeks.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been in New Jersey for official visits, while former President Barack Obama and First Lady Jill Biden have headlined Murphy campaign rallies.
Sanders and Murphy have a long standing relationship that was enough to keep the Vermont senator and two-time presidential candidate out of the 2017 Democratic gubernatorial primary when Murphy faced Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-Sayreville), the chairman of Sanders’ 2016 New Jersey campaign. Instead, Sanders’ son, Levi, campaign for Murphy.
The rally will be held at 6:45 PM in New Brunswick.
