Gov. Phil Murphy said President Donald Trump’s refusal to concede and begin the transition to a Biden administration was putting lives at risk Wednesday.
“The fact that the Biden team and Vivek Murthy, our friend who’s been a great advisor, and his transition team are being blocked out of those discussions is putting lives at risk,” the governor said at the day’s virus briefing. “Let there be no doubt about that.”
Trump has continued to falsely claim he won the election, which he lost to President-elect Joe Biden 306-232, while ordering administration staff to withhold documents and briefings normally afforded to incoming presidents and their staffs.
Murphy said the delays could impact the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines.
“You can’t saunter in on Jan. 20th and pick up the playbook and execute it,” he said. “This is a national health matter, and lives are at risk as a result.”
The governor said the issue didn’t come up during a call with the administration last week.
