Three important grassroots organizations in Morris County are urging Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) to seek the Democratic nomination for governor in 2025, something that will happen three days from now when the four-term congresswoman is scheduled to launch her campaign.
The 800-member Chatham Moms for Change, the 420-member Madison Area Call to Action, and the pro-Democracy MC/11 Forward were all formed in response to Donald Trump’s 2016 election as president. They worked with Sherrill in 2018 when she flipped the NJ-11 congressional seat to Democrats after 34 years of GOP control.
“We have witnessed Mikie’s dedication and the values she defends, and we believe her leadership is more crucial than ever for our state,” the groups said in a joint statement. “We are hopeful that Mikie will heed this call to leadership once again and run for governor of New Jersey—and if she does, we stand ready to support her wholeheartedly.”
The three grassroots groups said that Sherrill “recognizes the transformative power of grassroots organizing and possesses an extraordinary ability to galvanize voters and forge diverse coalitions for victory.”
“She has faced significant challenges in New Jersey, taking on issues like deteriorating infrastructure and the burden of rising costs with (an) unwavering focus on delivering tangible results for residents,” the trio of groups stated.
The praised Sherrill’s commitment to accountability, citing oversight over Trump during the last two years of her presidency, standing to the gun lobby, and opposing changes to the state’s Open Public Records Act that passed earlier this year with the support of a Democratic legislature and governor.
“Mikie exemplifies leadership with integrity, serving solely the interests of her constituents,” Chatham Moms for Action, Madison Area Call to Action and MC/11 said.
