Tahesha Way’s status as New Jersey’s new lieutenant governor is awaiting signoff from Mark Zuckerberg.
The conventional wisdom was that Way needed just two things to happen to get the job: a decision by Gov. Phil Murphy to pick her, and for someone to swear her in.
Murphy did the first this week when he settled on Way to succeed Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver, who died on August 1. Once he signed the direct appointment, Chief Justice Stuart Rabner administered the oath of office.
Since the Constitution doesn’t require State Senate confirmation, that was supposed to be all she needed.
Enter Facebook.
When Way’s staff sought to change her title to Lt. Governor on her Facebook page, they received a rejection message, sources confirmed to the New Jersey Globe. Now Team Way is trying to get approval, something that moves slowly because it involves a page for a government official.
In the meantime, staff was able to change the URL – it’s now https://www.facebook.com/LtGovernorWay — and her Intro says, “Lt. Governor to Governor Phil Murphy. New Jersey Secretary of State” — but her title remains as “New Jersey Secretary of State Tahesha Way.”
For Way, dealing with Elon Musk’s Twitter was easier since she doesn’t have a verified account with a gray checkmark. Her new handle is @Lt.GovWay.
