Assemblyman Jay Webber’s campaign on Friday announced the candidate would not sit for an interview with or seek the endorsement of the Star Ledger editorial board.
Webber’s campaign took issue with the content of an Aug. 12 editorial that bashed the candidate for falsely claiming his opponent, Mikie Sherrill, wanted to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the federal agency tasked with deporting immigrants that are in the country illegally.
Regardless of the reasons behind Webber’s eschewing an interview with the board, it’s likely a smart move for the Republican.
The paper’s editorial board endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016. Clinton ended up losing the contest to President Donald Trump, who is headlining a fundraiser for Webber next week. Vice President Mike Pence has already held two such fundraisers.
The board is a favorite target of New Jersey Republicans, who accuse the body of leaning too far to the left.
Yes, smart — there’s no need for a Republican to waste time with the media wing of the Democrats.
The Star-Ledger EBd is completely discredited at this point. They’re a punchline on an express lane to extinction.
