Tom Phillips, a human resources executive seeking the Republican nomination for Congress in New Jersey’s 7th district, raised a paltry $1,474 in the 4th quarter of 2019 and has just $3,041 in the bank.
The debt being carried by the Phillips campaign – the candidate loaned $3,559 to his House bid – is more than his cash-on-hand.
The first-time candidate wants to challenge freshman Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes), who starts the election year with a warchest of more than $2 million.
Phillips faces Senate Minority Leader Thomas Kean, Jr.. former U.S. Senate staffer Rosemary Becchi and Summit businessman Rob Trugman in the GOP primary to take on Malinowski.
He has raised $10,693 since entering the race last year.
Malinowski raised $615,000 in the 4th quarter and has brought in almost $2.4 million since taking office on year ago.
