Endorsement follows brutal attack ad by Hugin

The National Organization for Women (NOW) endorsed U.S. Senator Bob Menendez for re-election.

The endorsement by the largest feminist grassroots activist group in the U.S. comes one day after Republican Bob Hugin released a hard-hitting TV ad alleging that Menendez engaged in sex with prostitutes while in the Dominican Republic.  The charges, which came out in an affidavit from an FBI agent, have since been largely discredited.

“Because of Senator Menendez’s dedication to feminist issues, the National Organization for Women Political Action Committee has endorsed his candidacy for the New Jersey election,” said NOW political director Linda Berg.  “We look forward to working with Senator Menendez to achieve full equality for women and girls.”

Menendez said that he has a long record of fighting for women’s rights.

“In a political climate where women’s rights are on the chopping block, I am so proud to team up with the National Organization for Women.  Women’s rights are human rights, and it is critical that New Jersey has a senator willing to fight for them,” Menendez said.  “Throughout my life, I have stood up for women and supported legislation to expand women’s rights, protect a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions, combat postpartum depression, address sexual violence on college campuses and support victims of domestic violence.”

The two-term Democratic Senator says he is proud of his 100% rating from Planned Parenthood and on other women’s issues.

“My opponent, greedy, drug company CEO Bob Hugin, spent his life discriminating against women and supporting candidates and causes that have advocated rolling back women’s rights to a time long gone,” said Menendez.  “The stakes in this election couldn’t be higher, and together, with NOW’s support, we will fight for women and the values we share.”
