Gov. Phil Murphy slammed Mitch McConnell for sending the U.S. Senate home for a long weekend without taking action to extend unemployment benefits that expire at midnight.
Murphy called McConnell’s actions “despicable.”
“With millions of families literally left hanging, to simply go home for a long weekend is the ultimate act of irresponsible behavior and dereliction of duty,” Murphy said.
Murphy pushed McConnell to “get back to Washington and get this done.”
“Senator McConnell, please,” the governor said. “Families across our state and indeed across the nation are facing literally an economic meltdown on your watch and this is no time to take a weekend, never mind a long weekend, off.
McConnell, the senate majority leader, sent senators home without a deal over the next coronavirus relief package.
The Trump administration and Congress have been negotiating a package all week, but don’t seem to be close on a deal.
