Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Rocky Hill) says that he supports congressional action to terminate President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency.
“Every member of Congress took an oath to defend the Constitution. The President’s actions may force us to do so,” said Malinowski.
Trump plans to declare a national emergency to build an $8 billion border wall as part of his emergency executive power.
“As an assistant Secretary of State, I often urged authoritarian governments around the world not to use emergency powers to defy their legislatures, courts, and laws,” said Malinowski. “It’s unthinkable that we would need to do so in the United States of America, but the President has forced our hand and I believe the Congress will do what is right.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said yesterday that if Trump declares a national emergency following the passage of a government spending deal, the House might move to stop it.
“I support the enactment of a joint resolution to terminate the President’s emergency declaration, in accordance with the process described in the National Emergencies Act,” Malinowski said. “This isn’t about building or stopping the wall. This is about defending the Constitution.”
