Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie Is running just 6.4% behind where he was in 2016 when he won 7.4% of the vote in the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary.
Christie did not register as the first choice of any likely Republican primary voters in a University of New Hampshire poll released today but garners 1% of the vote as a second choice.
The poll puts Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ahead of former President Donald Trump, 42%-30%, as the first choice of Granite State Republicans, with former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley at 8%.
“Primary campaigns are very volatile, and leading a year before the primary does not guarantee a win in New Hampshire, the pollster said.
Also registering in the poll: New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming), and former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan at 4% each; South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem at 2%; and former Vice President Mike Pence, and U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-Florida) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas) at 1% each.
Christie has an upside-down favorable rating of 6%-65% among New Hampshire likely GOP primary voters, with 29% saying they are neutral toward him.
The former governor, who dropped out of the 2016 race after finishing sixth in the New Hampshire primary with no delegates, has not ruled out seeking the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
The University of New Hampshire poll was conducted between January 19-23 with a sample size of 349 likely Republican primary voters and a margin of error of +/- 5.2%.
