Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis) will deliver a six-minute speech at the Republican National Convention this week, he told The Press of Atlantic City.
A freshman congressman from South Jersey who was elected as a Democrat in 2018, Van Drew switched parties late last year after refusing to vote to impeach President Donald Trump.
Trump quickly endorsed Van Drew and traveled to New Jersey’s 2nd district in January for a rally in Wildwood. Trump advisor (and now-campaign manager) Bill Stepien, has become Van Drew’s top political advisor.
Republicans cleared the field for Van Drew — one of his opponents, David Richter, moved to the 3rd district to challenge Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) instead– and Van Drew won the GOP primary with 82%.
He faces Amy Kennedy, the wife of former Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy (D-Rhode Island) and scion of one of America’s fabled political families, in the general election.
The Cook Political Report has rated the Van Dew vs. Kennedy race as a toss-up.
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has still not appeared on a list of convention speakers.
