Three Democrats seek to take on Chris Smith

By Nikita Biryukov, March 30 2020 7:04 pm

Rep. Chris Smith, the longest-serving member of New Jersey’s congressional delegation, filed for re-election Monday.

The congressman submitted 687 signatures. His slogans are still pending.

He faces a single primary challenge from Alter Eliezer Richter, who filed with 266 signatures.

Richter is running under the “G-D great again in the USA” in Mercer County, “tip the scale #RichterforCongress” in Monmouth County and “stand for G-D with true pride” in Ocean County.

Two Democrats, Stephanie Schmid and David Applefield are listed as having filed on the Democratic side.

Applefield filed with 228 signatures. He’s running under the “time for moral leadership” slogan in all three of the fourth district’s counties.

It’s not clear how many signatures Schmid submitted, and her slogans are pending.

A third Democrat, Christine Conforti, told the New Jersey Globe she filed her petitions electronically around 3 p.m.

Due to delays caused by COVID-19, petition information may be incomplete at this time.

The deadline to file was 4:00 p.m. Monday.
