A Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in New Jersey wants Cory Booker to recuse himself from the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, saying his comments about during the presidential campaign impede his ability to be fair.

“During his failed presidential campaign, Cory Booker made patently false and malicious statements about the President, calling him ‘worse than a racist’ and said he would like to punch the President in the face,” said Hirsh Singh, one of Booker’s potential GOP opponents.  “It is fantasy to believe that Cory will be fair and impartial during the impeachment trial or that any of his fellow Democrat colleagues who have waged a campaign against the President would do the same.

Singh wants five other Democratic senators who sought the presidency – Bernie Sanders, Amy Klobuchar, Kamala Harris and Kirsten Gillibrand – top also remove themselves from the impeachment process.

“Cory Booker needs to do what is right for the people of New Jersey and recuse himself from the Senate impeachment trial today,” Singh said.

Booker ended his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination this month.
