Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) said she would donate campaign contributions from U.S. Senator Bob Menendez and Fred Daibes, an Edgewater developer awaiting sentencing for banking crimes and Menendez’s co-defendant in the Menendez case, to charity.
“In public service, nothing is more important than the public’s trust,” said Alex Ball, her chief of staff. “Congresswoman Sherrill is donating campaign contributions from Senator Menendez (2022) and Mr. Daibes (2018) to New Jersey charities that serve families experiencing homelessness.”
Menendez’s political action committee contributed $5,000 to Sherrill in 2022, and Daibes donated $2,500 to Sherrill’s first House campaign in 2018.
The $7,500 will go to an 11th district-based charity, the New Jersey Globe has learned. Sherrill is the sponsor of the Homeless Children and Youth Act to help more than 10,600 New Jersey students who are homeless.
Last Friday, Sherrill was among the first wave of Democratic lawmakers who called on Menendez to resign following his indictment on federal corruption charges.
Daibes, responsible for much of the new high-rise development along the Hudson River in Bergen County in recent years, has pleaded guilty to bank fraud. He was among a group of businessmen indicted last week for allegedly bribing Menendez.
