The Recreational Fishing Alliance endorsed Rep. Tom MacArthur on Wednesday.

“Congressman Tom MacArthur has been an incredible friend to saltwater anglers nationwide. He is as accessible as anyone we have ever worked with in Congress. Tom has opposed oil drilling off our coast, worked to have our local channels dredged, and has always supported efforts to ensure catch limits are based on the best available science,” said RFA executive director Jim Donofrio “Tom’s opponent is – quite frankly – an extremist who is out of touch with the needs and concerns of our nation’s saltwater sportsmen.”

The national 501c4 group boasts strong membership in the third district, where fishing is an economic and recreational boon.

The RFA has previously endorsed candidates on both sides of the aisle. In 2014, the group backed U.S. Sen. Cory Booker in his run for his first full term in the Senate. It also backed Late Rep. John Adler when he won the district’s seat in 2008.

The group won’t be able to provide MacArthur much when it comes to funds, as the group has spent less than $50,000 each cycle since 2014, but its organizing strength could be a boon to MacArthur, especially as he faces fire over a state party mailer some have accused of being racist that called his opponent, Andy Kim, “fishy.”
