Republican congressional candidate Frank Pallotta wants his opponent and two other incumbent House Democrats to renounce a petition calling for police to be pulled out of Elizabeth schools.
“This is foolish and dangerous,” Pallotta said. “I do not believe we should be defunding police protection for schools and using children to make a political statement. Too much is at stake.”
Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff), Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) and Bill Pascrell (D-Paterson) — the three lawmakers Pallotta wants to condemn the petition — oppose defunding the police.
“We can & must do better, & I’m grateful to those who’ve stood up for change & to those in law enforcement who do right by us every day,” Gottheimer said on Twitter in June. “The solution lies not in defunding or dismantling law enforcement, but in real, bipartisan change that protects our communities and finally ends systemic racism.”
Pallotta wants the three to sign a pledge promising to oppose any measure seeking to defund the police.
