The Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF) launched a new ad in the attacking former Assistant Secretary of State Tom Malinowski on Thursday, accusing him of being a liberal extremist and targeting the candidate’s ties to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

The ad begins by touting high marks on bipartisanship given to Rep. Leonard Lance (R-Clinton) by the Lugar Center and Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy. The ranking put Lance as the 13th-most bipartisan member of the House, making him the second-most bipartisan member of New Jersey’s House delegation.

Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff, who co-chairs the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, of which Lance is a member, ranked ninth on the list, which derives its rankings using members’ sponsorship and co-sponsorship of bipartisan bills.

The ad then pivots into an attack over Malinowski’s relationship with Pelosi. Malinowski is the only Democratic House challenger in the state that hasn’t said he wouldn’t vote Pelosi into a leadership role if elected.

The ad then says Malinowski favors “budget-busting big government.” That charge may refer to Malinowski’s support of a single-payer health care system, but it isn’t entirely clear.

It also target’s Malinowski over his stance on the Republican tax bill passed last year. The candidate wants to repeal the law, citing the disproportionate impact the cap the bill imposed on state and local tax deductions has on New Jersey residents.

The PAC, which has ties to House Speaker Paul Ryan, is also launching an ad targeting Andy Kim, a former Obama White House aide who is challenging Rep. Tom MacArthur in the 3rd district.

That ad largely follows the same line as previous CLF ads targeting Kim, focusing on a tax break the candidate took and then returned on a home in Washington D.C.

The group has field offices in both districts and is canvassing and phone banking on behalf of both Lance and MacArthur.
