There is some good news for Bob Menendez.
He probably won’t face disbarment after his conviction on federal corruption charges since he retired from the practice of law in 2000 – eighteen years before his crimes took place. The New Jersey Supreme Court does not appear to have jurisdiction to disbar Menendez unless they find he misbehaved before they accepted his resignation.
It’s unlikely that Menendez would apply for reinstatement. He has not practiced law since his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992.
By retiring, Menendez avoided paying his Bar Association dues and other costs of being an active attorney.
