The annexation of Ukrainian territory by Vladimir Putin and the “coercive and violent conscription of unwilling Russian men” is an act of desperation, U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez said on Friday.
“To be clear, the United States will never recognize Putin’s illegal annexation of Ukrainian land,” Menendez said. “We will demand accountability for the atrocities in places under Russian illegal occupation like Bucha and Izyum. And we will never entertain Putin’s delusional attempts to rewrite the map of Europe.”
Menendez slammed Putin’s continued threats and “the outrageous and illegal referendums carried out with Russian military forcing residents of occupied Ukrainian territories to ‘vote’ at gunpoint.”
According to the New Jersey senator, the approval of a $12.3 billion aid package to Ukraine sends a message that the United States will continue its support.
“Putin’s craven threats against the world will not deter us,” Menendez said. “American assistance to Ukraine should continue for as long as it takes to win.”
