Rep. Analilia Mejia (D-Glen Ridge) is heading to Florida this weekend to campaign for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon, joining a series of get-out-the-vote events in Orlando and Miami as Democrats make their final push before Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Mejia, a progressive who scored a major upset in New Jersey’s 11th district special Democratic primary in February, will appear alongside Nixon at a Friday afternoon fish fry in Orlando, followed by a visit to a local church.

On Saturday, Mejia and Nixon will join Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava for a 10 a.m. campaign caravan kickoff in Liberty City. Later that afternoon, they will participate in a get-out-the-vote bus tour in South Florida with Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Massachusetts).

The Florida trip is part of Mejia’s growing involvement in progressive campaigns outside New Jersey.  She previously traveled to Michigan to support Abdul El-Sayed and has sought to boost candidates who share her opposition to corporate political spending and support for stronger labor protections.

Nixon, a Florida state representative, is challenging Republican U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody in a special election for the seat previously held by Marco Rubio, who resigned to become Secretary of State.  The Cook Political Report rates the contest Solid Republican, although recent polling suggests a closer race.  A St. Pete Polls survey conducted October 26-28 found Moody leading Nixon, 49% to 45%.
